What Does a Container Stand On? – How to Prepare a Foundation for a Container

When using a shipping container as a storage unit and planning to place it in one location for an extended period, proper groundwork is essential. Containers used as storage can be set on various types of terrain, but preparing the right foundation is crucial for ensuring stability and ventilation under the floor.

The ideal base is a flat and stable surface made of concrete or paving. In such cases, no additional preparations are necessary, as the container will rest evenly on the hardened ground. However, if the terrain is not leveled or paved, the first step is to assess whether the area is adequately drained. Excessive water accumulation during rainfall can compromise safe storage. The site for the container should also be accessible for unloading, as trucks and cranes have their own limitations.

Once these basic conditions are met, the area should be cleared of obstacles, such as large stones, vegetation, roots, or other debris. Afterward, any unevenness must be leveled to create a stable and even foundation. This step is vital to ensure the container is securely and evenly supported.

If you plan to place the shipping container on unpaved ground, specific considerations for the foundation are necessary:

  • The container must be level. All supports should be evenly aligned to prevent the shifting of goods inside.
  • Reliable supports. Suitable options include concrete blocks, road plates, or jumbo plates. These should be positioned at six key points—at all four corners of the container and in the middle of the longer sides.
  • Proper placement of supports. The blocks should be slightly embedded into the ground and positioned away from the edges or corners of the container to allow proper water drainage.
  • Access to utilities. If the container has water or sewage connections, ensure these remain accessible for easy setup.
  • Drainage. Installing drainage around the container is recommended to prevent water from pooling underneath.

Following these steps ensures a stable and secure container installation, allowing for safe and convenient storage. This setup makes it possible to place a container virtually anywhere without worrying about a lack of paving. Periodically checking the condition of the foundation is also advisable to ensure the container remains secure over time.
